Comments :  In Australia the consumers choice in bathroom design is to have a seperate shower cubicle with a ceramic tiled floor surrounded by a framed glass shower screen. These bathrooms are in most cases constructed from timber frames and a sheet floor substrate. One of the biggest problems in this type of construction is that the building industry nearly always take the cheapest type of liquid applied waterproofing products and that usually results in a poorly read and unskilled applicator doing the job and failure in the system. My Company receives over 3000 phone calls a year from consumers who suffer from the leaking shower syndrome, and we are getting sick a tired of fixing other so called waterproofing contractors stuff ups. The heartache that the home owners are suffering is enough to send anyone into depression.

On demolition of these failed shower areas we find, acrylic resins, bituminous modified urethanes, polyester resin and rubber modified latex, most of the systems are reinforced with a fibreglass matt or chopped strand. I would like to ask the NRCA to give me some feedback on the mentioned chemicals, should they be used in an area such as a shower cubicle where hydrostatic pressure builds up at the base, what is the life expectancy of these materials and are our home consumers and builders being led down the garden path by money grabbing manufacturers. Thank You. Vice Chairman WICA NSW Australia
